Update on Mandatory Residential Sprinklers in Oregon

E-mail Print

Both NFPA and ICC model building codes require fire sprinklers in all new 1&2 Family Dwellings.  In Oregon the Residential Code Committee is reviewing the 2009 ICC model Residential Code for adoption effective July 1, 2011.  A significant debate is occurring over the mandatory residential sprinkler provisions of the model code.  The Residential Code Review Committee has replaced the mandatory requirement with a “Local Option” provision known as “Appendix S – Local Ordinance for Residential Fire Sprinklers".  When adopted by a city or other government entity, sprinklers would be required in new homes built on lots created after the adoption of the appendix.  It would primarily be effective in cities growing beyond their existing boundaries.  The full text of the proposed Appendix S can be found at:  http://www.bcd.oregon.gov/committees/11orsc/Proposals/BCD-11_Appendix_S_Local_Ordinance_Fire_Sprinklers.pdf .
